any other moms relating to Nancy and Silas re: teens toking or not?
Jul 11 2008, 4:47 PM EDT I totally relate to Nancy's dilemna with Silas....although i dont sell and never have, i am pro choice regarding marijuana use for adults.....however, I'm very uneasy re: my almost 17 year old son telling me he smokes and will continue to despite my wishes! Should I teach him about responsible use and the dangers of addiction, or is this implicitly condoning cannabis use in under age persons? Can anyone else relate???? 14 out of 19 found this valuable. RE: any other moms relating to Nancy and Silas re: teens toking or not
Jul 11 2008, 9:00 PM EDT Hello, I started smoking at the age of 13 (for medicinal use). I have a laundry list of conditions (anxiety, bipolar, migraines, and chronic depression...no pun intended). There are times I do not have access since I live in Texas and can't just visit a dispensary. I have never had "withdraw syndrome" when I've had to go without. I usually smoke on a daily basis to maintain an even attitude since other medications were too expensive and not as effective. I found that this plant treats all my symptoms at once. So I wouldn't worry about your son becoming "addicted"...that is another lie put out by the government. Yes, you should tell your son that he needs to be responsible with its usage. I only smoke when I need to mellow out which is at the end of the day when my work is done and it is time to just relax. I do not use it for recreation too often, but I know how it effects me and that only comes from experience...it effects people differently and he needs to understand that as well. Once you and him learn the truth about this plant you will see that it is a much safer alternative to alcohol and tobacco...I smoke cigarettes too, but wish I had never started...those I am addicted to. I would be more upset finding my child drinking or smoking cigarettes. 6 out of 7 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 11 2008, 9:09 PM EDT Continued...680 characters...pffft. I would be upset like I said because I know the dangers of alcohol and the addictive properties of cigarettes. I also know the truth about marijuana and would much rather sit down and smoke with my child and explain the truth about Gods gift to humanity which has been wrongfully demonized. He is you child though and so the decision is ultimately yours, but in reality it is his as well. It took my mother a while to understand, but being lied to your whole life is not something that you get over in one night. It took her up until last year...I actually have the show to thank for helping her see how we really are. She knew how I was, but she liked to compare weed to heroin, crack, etc (the government was effective with her brainwashing). Now she is a member of NORML like I am and is learning more and more everyday :) I suggest doing some research before having a serious conversation with your son. Just let him know to be careful with law enforcement since they are a bigger threat than the plant he is enjoying :) I hope I was a little help, and if you'd like...I'm available to talk with you if you like...we are a caring community trying to spread the truth and decriminalize this beautiful and miraculous herb..take care. 5 out of 6 found this valuable. Sep 7 2008, 9:30 PM EDT to be completely honest, i think that you should not be upset with your son smoking pot, as long as hes not doing it out on the street where to police can get him. Although this may sound ridiculous, i believe that he should be able to smoke weed at home, where the police cant find him and throw him in jail, as long as he isnt exposing it to the younger members of the family 3 out of 4 found this valuable. Myself being 27 now have smoked with my Mom since i was 13 years old. She saw it as i was going to do what i was going to do regardless , at least with smokin with me she could moitor my actions more carefully & on top of that she didnt have to hide it from me anymore which opened our relationship up alot. The downfall was any time i was out of smoke i would ask good ol moms where the weed was at -_- 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: any other moms relating to Nancy and Silas re: teens toking or not?
Sep 11 2008, 4:58 PM EDT i have smoked since i was 13 also my parents NEVER condoned it and my mom flipped when she found out (now im 30 and she see's its better than alcahol she would smoke but it makes her stupid and paranoid) my son is 11 and wont even say a cuss word which i am very proud of but he has always hated school and made bad grades ...then they gave him the "chunk' test which is the s.a.t. these days and made advanced UNBELIEVABLE!! all the kids with advanced scores won a camping trip suddenly he was like wow i get rewarded for good grades and this year he is an a honor roll student but he is still my son and sooo much like me that i am afraid he will get introduced to it by a friend and try it.the only reason i think it is bad for young kids is because it does affect the memory ...so i have never hidden it from him i just tell him that as your growing and your brain is still developing that it could be detrimental to his capacity to learn and make good grades or care about his grades(this wont work forever) but teenagers are difficult people they WILL do what they want and i havent a clue as to how i will handle this I know when he is 16 if he wants to drink i will let him as long as its at home and only beer--- because its soooo dangerous to be out drinkin and of course teenagers will drink and then drive .....pot is sooo much safer really ...but will i feel comfortable and not like a shit head for smokin with him ??i dont know HOWEVER if I found out he was already doin it and refused to stop then i know for sure i would make a rule he was allowed to do it at home only we live on a 150 acre farm so i would probably make him go outside but i would rather him and his friends be here than "out there' because one bust and it would follow him the rest of his life on a juevinile record its a tough call but if it was me i would rather the kids be where i could keep an eye on what they are doing.it was a gateway drug for me i wanted to get more high 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Sep 11 2008, 5:09 PM EDT cont.... most smokers will say thats bullshit but it was true for me i smoked pot got high every day to the point i couldnt get high anymore so turned to harder stuff like meth coke acid i did it all luckily i lived to tell about it , i quit everything else by the time i was 27 i will be 31 in couple of months --but i still smoke pot but just to relax a joint will last me 2 days a quarter more than a week ...but i would want to have my son do it at home i think where i could make sure him and his friends didnt smoke so much they become immune and turn to bigger and badder stuff at least at home he is safe and too remember there is always the "idiot" friend who will try to talk the others into doin somethin stupid cause he cant handle being responsible and just gets plain stupid ..so you can watch for which one is it you need to keep your eye on if you let him ....i would also think maybe have a talk with him about school comes first get homework done 1st and how important it is he keep this "agreement " between you two cause of it being illeagle i know this is what i will do if it comes to this and i will want my son to understand you can still smoke occasionally and make good grades it doesnt have to be 1 or th other and education is sooo important for a good carrer and money so life isnt harder...... 2 out of 2 found this valuable. RE: any other moms relating to Nancy and Silas re: teens toking or not?
Sep 16 2008, 1:20 PM EDT Although I wouldn't smoke with my daughter at this stage of the game(she is 15), she does know that I do and she is ok with that. She understands that this is an adult decision that I make as an adult. Once she is an adult, then she can make that decision for herself. She also knows that as an adult, I take the risk of being caught and will have to deal with whatever consequences, if any. I have two sisters who are alcoholics(functioning alkies but alkies nonetheless). I have always told my daughter that I would rather she smoked herb than drink anyday. I have been smoking for over 20 years and this has never been a gateway drug to any other drug. It's a god given relaxer that has little or no side effects. Now,if your son smokes, you have a responsibility to talk to him about it. It's the same thing as sex. Once it begins, it's no longer an issue of morality, it's an issue of safety and as such, should be addressed by the parent. At 17, you cannot make him stop doing anything, you can only give him the tools and info to help him make good decisions. Good Luck!! 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I ask other readers to use their brain and assess these claims that marijuana is treatment for serious disease. I am not a Dr. but, based on the language of your post, I do not think you either. Nobody should self-medicate without talking to a doctor. In many cases, using weed long term can make depression worse. It is addictive, I live with the problem on a daily basis. It is a drain on my bank account, my sanity and my potential. I get really upset when people dispense advice that is not responsible or legitimate. If your son is able to be happy and well adjusted while being a pot head, chances are he could have been even better without it. Just a thought. Be responsible folks. 1 out of 5 found this valuable. Oct 2 2008, 5:33 PM EDT Been in a situation like yours. When my daughter found out about me smoking we had the talk and told her it was her choice (she was 16) BUT I would prefer if she toked with me first. So far so good, she's only done it a few times but moderation is the key for me. 2 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: any other moms relating to Nancy and Silas re: teens toking or not?
Dec 10 2008, 2:40 PM EST You should make sure that he is well-acquainted with the details of state/federal laws and punishments for marijuana usage. Most importantly, he should never sell, and never store it, or any paraphernalia, in his car. There is no reason to jeopardize a clean record with a charge that is so avoidable. Marijuana itself is not addictive, though the habit and lifestyle are VERY easy to get comfortable with, but if his grades are good and he is an active member of the family, then let him be. By the time he hits 21 and realizes how much he could have accomplished had he not been smoking, he'll get his ass into gear. Make sure he doesn't get involved in any other drugs though - I feel that for our generation, it easily leads to pills and cocaine, which is such a pity. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
